TRIPUNITHURA: The students of Government Boys’ VHSS have already proved their efficiency and social commitment through a series of activities including a detailed study of the root cause of the pollution of Kadambrayar.Now the students of this school are keen to experiment with the soil as they have been cultivating a variety of vegetables in the courtyard of their school. “Last year, our students could successfully complete the paddy cultivation in the school campus, said K B Shylaja, the headmistress of the school. “For a change, this year our students have selected an entirely different item for cultivation, cauliflower,” said V Mini, who is in-charge of the extra curricular activities at the school. At first we have no idea about the nature of the crop. However, we took it as a challenge and planted a few cauliflower plants. Considering the tender nature of the seedlings and utmost care it needed, we have divided the students into different groups. With the strong support from the teaching and non-teaching staff, all the plants, more than a dozen, have been flourishing the courtyard of the school. “As we are well aware of the side effects of the pesticides, we have been using pure organic manure,” said Bharath and Aseem, standard X students who have been actively involved in this unique farming. With the prize money of `5000, awarded by the BPCL, to the school for the best ENCON Club, the school authorities bought necessary organic manure and other items needed for the proper growth of the plants.Now the plants are flourishing. The students and the teachers are eagerly waiting for the first ever harvest, expected to happen in March or April. Besides cauliflower other vegetables including plantain, cabbage, carrot and tapioca are also growing in the spacious courtyard of the school.
