CHENNAI: DMK’s heir presumptive M K Stalin led a state-wide stir which could be aimed at galvanising his beleaguered partymen ahead of the impending local body polls. The stir also saw him dismiss charges of land grab against party functionaries as politically motivated. The protests saw thousands of supporters court arrest. Demonstrations were held in every party district. The protest near the Panagal Maaligai in Saidapet was led by Mayor M Subramanian, who courted arrest with other leaders. The agitation comes close on the heels of the arrest of party veteran Veerapandi S Arumugam and its MLA J Anbazhagan on land grabbing charges. “We are not demanding that no cases be filed against our cadre. We are only raising our voice against the false cases. We are prepared to face action if we have committed wrong,” said Stalin at a meeting near the Collector’s Office. “Of all the different posts I have held in the government and in the party, it is this one, at the head of this demonstration, that has made me most proud,” he added in an indication of the DMK top brass’ attempt to motivate cadre in the wake of scandals. But the leader said the protest was not for political reasons, but for justice. He also attacked CM J Jayalalithaa saying she held no moral authority to speak on corruption with the list of charges against her. Among those who took part in North Chennai were Ex-minister Parithi Illamvazhuthi, party MP TKS Elangovan, former AIADMK strongman PK Sekar Babu, SP Sargunapandian and propaganda secretary Kushboo.
