Srinagar: Lawyers in Srinagar on Saturday took to the streets demanding the arrest of Shopian incident culprits, the release of all separatists leaders and a complete check on alleged human rights violations by the security forces in the Kashmir Valley.
The lawyers, who boycotted courts, took out a procession from the lower court complex at Court Road near here, raising slogans against the authorities for failing to arrest the culprits involved in the killing and rape of two women at Shopian on May 30.
Also demanding release of separatist leaders, including chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) chief Shabir Ahmad Shah and others, they marched through different streets, including historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital.
The lawyers were also raising slogans against a private national television channel for telecasting wrong information about the Shopian incident.
They also marched through Ganthaghar and Partap Park before reaching Mushtaq Press Enclave where they staged a dharna for some time.
The lawyers later returned to court and resumed their work.
The lawyers protest was a part of programme announced by Geelani for students, government employees, traders, transporters and lawyers.
He had appealed to them to protest against the Shopian and other alleged security force atrocities daily.
On Friday, employees of different government departments had staged a similar dharna in the city while on June 10 and 11, students protested in different parts of the valley, including Srinagar.
