Mumbai: Alleging that Maharashtra Government's special township scheme was a 'conspiracy' to throw 'sons of soil' out of Mumbai, Shiv Sena Executive president Uddhav Thackeray on Monday demanded immediate action on housing problems of the people.
"Building low cost townships is a conspiracy to throw original people out of the city and then build high rise towers for rich in that place," Uddhav said in a letter to Chief Minister Ashok Chavan.
About a lakh townships are being built, as announced in the state government's housing policy which also invites more outsiders to stay in Mumbai, Uddhav said.
The Sena executive president also demanded that the government should decide on providing 450 sq ft houses to tenants for redevelopment of their old buildings.
On the Slum Rehabilitation Scheme, Udhhav said the government has failed to stop corruption in the scheme and asked whether decisions to approve pending schemes under SRA would be taken soon.
Pointing out that the deadline for the city development plan, prepared in 1991, would get over by 2011, Uddhav said "It is sad that the government is still not clear on the development plan and it should have started working on it much earlier."
Uddhav reminded the government about its promise to rehabilitate around two lakh people staying in MHADA transit camps from years.
There is no progress over the announcement to set up a Housing Regulatory Authority, he said.
The government should resolve rehabilitation problem of slum dwellers in Dharavi and airport area and slums on BMC and government lands, he said.
