THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Public Works Department (PWD) has constituted a special team to monitor the repair and maintenance of road works. The special team at the Secretariat-level will analyse the works on a day-to-day basis. Also, monitoring of works will be done at six levels - from Section to Secretariat. As per the new initiative, the public too can monitor the details of the work which would be available on the PWD website on a daily basis. According to PWD Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju, action has been initiated for the completion of patch works of PWD roads by November 30. The renewal works that has already been sanctioned would be completed before March 1, 2012. “The public helpline service will be strengthened and prompt action would be taken based on media reports. There must be a solution to strengthen roads, which are washed away within two months after repair and moreover roads must be developed on a scientific basis,” he said . The PWD Minister also added that the scientific methods used in the construction of KSTP roads and KRFB roads would be utilised in constructing the roads. The Minister has issued strict instructions for the speedy and timely completion of repair works. At section level, assistant engineer and overseer would be assigned to conduct daily inspection of road works. At the sub-division level, the assistant executive engineer will check the updation of daily progress on the PWD website. Also a monitoring system would be introduced at the Division level. The requirement of bitumen and usage of emulsion will be watched at the Division level. A special team of officers will be constituted in the superintending engineer’s office to monitor the works, tenders, media reports and updates on the PWD website. The chief engineer will conduct periodic district-wise inspection. The special team at the Secretariat level will monitor the works and will update the minister about it.
