New Delhi: Daniel Craig has appeared as James Bond in three films so far, ‘Casino Royale’, ‘Quantum of Solace’ and ‘Skyfall’, but every time he has added a new dimension to the character. Gradually, Craig has become less dependent on gadgets and more driven by his cynicism.
Initially, Craig faced a lot of criticism due to his inability to handle a Bond car properly and for the lack of high brow English sophistication, but ‘Casino Royale’ brought a new side of the ruthless MI6 agent. No Bond prior to Craig looked so human. He emerged as a motivated man on mission but unlike his predecessors, Craig always found himself trapped in the dilemma of being a commitment phobic lover.
From Sean Connery to Pierce Brosnan, no Bond appeared even the half emotional towards the women as Craig did. Of course, his female boss’ orders are important to him, but still he felt and got moved by the plight of his female partners.
James Bond is still traditional in his approach which helps him in getting intense at times, and who better than Daniel Craig could personify it. Despite his well knitted suits, Craig is conventional in his selection of words. The interesting thing is that he gambles more like a street gambler than a suave spy.
Deadpan humour is another thing that separates Daniel Craig from Pierce Brosnan, Roger Moore and others. Sarcasm easily gets replaced by ‘don’t come in my way’ attitude whenever his joke stretches.
Craig is 44 now and this looks on his face but good writing saves the day for him. His grittiness hasn’t reduced a bit in three films; in fact he has evolved as someone who can bounce back at any time. However, Pierce Brosnan did the same in ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’.
Roger Moore himself has acknowledged that Daniel Craig has the suitable build to play James Bond. His physique is more like an untrained wrestler than a trained agent, he is beefy and is able to sustain immense pain.
Daniel Craig’s list of virtues also includes the ability to strike a compromise. This gives him an edge over normal agents who know nothing other than the language of gun.
A good combination of toughness and vulnerability, plus the absence of orientation for catchphrases make Daniel Craig a people’s Bond. He is the common man’s Bond, James Bond.
