Bhopal: In a new twist to the high profile Vyapam Scam, an embattled Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has now made the startling claim that he was the original whistleblower in the scam.
Chouhan said, " I initiated the CBI probe into the Vyapam scam. I am the original whistleblower in the case."
But Chouhan's claim has been contradicted by documents accessed by CNN-IBN which showed that when the Chief Minister was asked about the Vyapam scam on the floor of the House at least 50 times and 20 letters written to him his reply at best has been evasive.
In 2009, Independent MLA Paras Saklecha was the first person to question the Vyapam admissions on the floor of the House. On March 31, 2011, the Chief Minister was asked in the Assembly about the number of fake admissions detected between 2007 and 2010.
Chouhan replied in negative saying, 'there's none so far'.
On November 29, 2011 a committee was constituted to look into the admission process.
In January 2015, Chouhan gave in and agreed that there have been 1000 fake admissions since 2007.
Saklecha said, "For two years now, the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister has been behind many deaths. He has put the state's credibility at stake. What is the need of a CBI probe now? What was he doing all this while?"
The Vyapam scam is already posing a serious threat to Chouhan's chair. As the CBI begins the probe into this mammoth scam the Chief Minister clearly seems to be fighting a losing perception battle.
