KOCHI: Creating yet another roadblock for the admissions to post-graduate courses in medical colleges, the Fees Regulatory Committee for Self-financing Colleges, which met here on Saturday, failed to fix the fees for these courses. According to sources, it is the high fees proposed by the college managements that have come in the way of fixing the fees.At first glance, the committee found that the fees for various PG courses in the medical stream submitted by the college managements are more than double the actual expenditure. Most of the colleges demand Rs 18 to 38 lakh as fees for PG courses in various specialisations. It is for the first time that the fees for PG courses in medical streams are being fixed. The managements demand high fees citing the reason that they have to take huge bank loans to arrange infrastructure and other facilities. As the colleges which were allotted PG courses have already flourished, there is no need to provide additional facilities. The facilities arranged for degree courses can be used for PG courses as well. It is for the PG courses in general medicine and paediatrics which have many takers that the high fees are being demanded. There are reports that the managements seek a handsome amount as donation over and above the high fees. The Justice Mohammed committee had fixed fees for graduate courses earlier. But the managements moved the Kerala High Court to get the fees increased and got a verdict in their favour. Then the committee submitted a revision petition. The main contention of Justice Mohammed committee is that the fees for the colleges were fixed by it after conducting proper studies.
