Bombings result of UPA's soft anti-terror policy: BJP

The BJP on Tuesday blamed the ruling UPA government's ‘soft approach’ on terrorism for the serial bombings in Mumbai and Srinagar.

BJP spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad, who condemned the string of bomb attacks in Mumbai and Srinagar, said former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, party chief Rajnath Singh and senior party leader L K Advani have appealed for calm.

"The BJP leadership condemns these blasts in the strongest terms," he said.

Prasad, whose party had opposed the repeal of POTA, however, insisted that terror attacks have increased in the country over the past two years.

"There has been a rise in terror attacks under the UPA because it’s soft on terrorism. Initiatives against terrorism have been traded for votes and the message has been very clear to terrorists and their patrons," Prasad added.

Asking the people to maintain peace and calm in the face of grave provocations, on behalf of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Leader of Opposition L K Advani and BJP President Rajnath Singh, party Spokesman Ravi Shankar Prasad said that the root of the problem was the "kid glove handling" of the terrorist menace by the UPA constituents for the sake of vote bank politics.

Describing the serial blasts as shocking, Shiv Sena Executive President Uddhav Thackeray blamed the Maharashtra Government's inefficiency for the complete deterioration of law and order.

"Home Minister R R Patil and Revenue Minister Narayan Rane should now answer who is behind the bomb blasts," Thackeray alleged, referring to the duo's attempts to lay the blame on the desecration of his mother Meena Tai Thackeray's statue on Sunday.

"The vandalisation was the handiwork of fanatics. Will they now claim that the Sena has engineered the blasts," he asked.

Apex industry chamber CII expressed shock at the blasts and hoped that calm and peace will prevail over the city.

CII said it was 'shocked and grieved at the bomb blasts'. "We pray for calm and peace and hope that the perpetrators will be brought to book," the chamber said.
