Ranchi: Security forces killed two Maoists in a fierce gunbattle in Ranchi district just a few hours before voting began for the fourth phase of Jharkhand elections.

For the first time a helicopter gunship was used to flush out Maoists. Security forces fired 500 rounds of bullets and also lobbed grenades.

The Central Reserve Police Force and the state police joined hands for the anti-Maoist operation called 'Jharkhand Jaguar'.

A huge cache of arms and ammunition including 200 kgs of explosives, 100 detonators and 30 kgs of can bombs were also recovered.

The Maoists have given a call to boycott the ongoing Assembly elections in the state.

Polling for 51 seats has been completed in the first three phases while the final phase will be held on December 18. Results will be announced on December 23.
