New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to pass an interim order against Centre’s notification making Aadhaar mandatory for availing benefits of various social welfare schemes.
A bench of the SC said that it will not pass an order unless there are details of those who have actually been denied benefits for want of Aadhaar.
The court said it cannot pass orders on “mere apprehensions and uncertainties" and added that no clarification or further observations are required at this stage.
“The state is a democratic welfare state which is saying that we are not depriving anyone of benefits. Alternative IDs are valid at this moment," the SC said.
The Centre on its part has said that it has already extended the deadline for getting Aadhaar from June 30 to September 30. The SC will hear the case next on July 7.
The apex court was hearing three separate petitions challenging government's notification making Aadhaar mandatory for availing benefits of various social welfare schemes.
