New Delhi: The Supreme Court has constituted a committee headed by a retired High Court Judge, Justice Sirijagan, to submit a report on the rising incidents of dog bites in Kerala.
The committee will study the complaints of dog bites, treatment administered to victims, availability of anti rabies vaccines and cases of deaths due to dog bites. The first report of the commission is expected to be filed in 12 weeks.
There has been a lot of public anger over rising incidents of stray dog menace across Kerala. Locals complain that it is also affecting Kerala's tourism industry. Stray dog menace has spiraled out of control and has posed a clear threat to public life. At least 90,000 people were affected by feral dogs in 2015, according to a government estimate.
The state government had decided to cull "rabid and dangerous" stray dogs in June 2015. An all-party meeting chaired by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had entrusted local self-government institutions with the task.
It was opposed by the dog lovers and animal rights organisations.
