New Delhi: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt on Monday sought time to surrender on various grounds as the designated TADA court extended the deadline to give himself up till December 21.
The deadline has been extended for Dutt, held guilty under Arms Act for possessing weapons in the 1993 Mumbai serial bombings, and three other convicts.
Dutt applied for extension of bail, a day ahead of his scheduled surrender. His petition has been posted for hearing on Tuesday when CBI is expected to file a reply.
He was found guilty of possessing a 9 mm pistol and an AK-56 rifle on November 28 but was granted three weeks to surrender.
His lawyer Farhana Shah told news agency PTI that as the deadline expires on Tuesday, he sought more time on Monday.
Dutt pleaded for more time as he is yet to finish work in his unfinished film projects, sort out the will of his late father actor Sunil Dutt and complete financial arrangements for his teenaged daughter Trishala, who lives in US with her maternal grandparents.
Designated Judge P D Kode allowed former Additional Collector of Customs S N Thapa, Sanjay's friend Rusi Mulla and Zebunisa Kazi time to surrender as they pleaded for relief on compassionate grounds.
Thapa sought extension of deadline on medical grounds, saying he was undergoing treatment of lung cancer, Zebunisa said she was advised angiography.
Rusi claimed he had to look after his father, mother-in-law and her sister who were over 85 years and bed-ridden.
Thapa, a dismissed customs official, was found guilty of conspiracy and helping prime conspirator Tiger Memon in smuggling arms and RDX which were used in the blasts.
Zebunisa was held guilty for keeping arms, which were brought to her from the residence of Sanjay, while Rusi was convicted for possessing a pistol belonging to the actor.
