Mumbai: The Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) would soon begin salvage operations of the ship which had run aground near Chennai. The salvage operation is likely to start from November 7, a press release issued by the Directorate said. "A meeting with the owners, salvors, hull and machinery insurance and protection and indemnity club was held to plan out the salvage of the vessel," the statement said adding the salvors have already boarded the vessel "Pratibha Cauvery".
According to DGS, the vessel has 357 tonnes of fuel and 3.5 tonnes of diesel. Meanwhile, the DGS also ordered a preliminary probe into to the incident. The vessel, after discharging cargo, was waiting for dry docking at Chennai anchorage when it was hit by the storm.
A total of 22 sailors abandoned the ship in a life boat which capsized due to bad weather. Three sailors have died and other three are missing. The 26,000 DWT tanker belonged to Mumbai-based Pratibha Shipping Company.
