KOCHI: Members of the rock band, ‘Black Letters’ are  on cloud nine after bagging two of the most coveted titles at Saarang 2012 (Powerchords), the popular college fest hosted by the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras (IIT-M).‘Black Letters’, a Kochi-based band, pipped 34 other talented rock bands to the post, and became proud winners of the title. “It was a wonderful experience performing on such a big stage with so many talented teams. We’re still in a pleasant state of shock about the win,” says Sharath Narayan, the singer of the band who also won ‘Best metal vocalist’.‘Black Letters’ is a four-piece band consisting vocalist Sharath Narayan (SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Chennai); lead guitarist Sarang Menon (SCMS College), base guitarist Arjun Radhakrishnan (Sacred Hearts College, Thevara), and drummer Akhash Chacko (KLE Law College, Bangalore). The band was floated four years ago when high school mates, Akash Chacko, Tarun Joe Martin, who is now in Australia, and Sarang Menon decided to take their music beyond the school boundaries. “It was a coincidence that the trio were looking for a  perfect front man and found me. There are my long-time friends,” says Sharath. The four friends have varied taste in music. But this didn’t prove to be a bane at all.“Actually, this helped us in a big way to win many awards and prizes at various competitions. The toughest part though is to answer questions about the genre of our band.  Out of the songs we do some are bluesy, some are pure rock n roll, and some are alternative and post punk rock,” says Sharath. The band, which was initially named ‘Rome’, started writing songs in alternative metal genre and they realised they belong to old school rock and roll or post grunge music. Later, they decided to write songs under the brand name ‘Black Letters’. They say the name ‘Black Letters’ will be more inspirational.“We’ve been taking our passion very seriously since the past one year. The making of music is not that easy. We have so far written and composed seven songs. We released an EP (demo) last year, and now are planning to release a full-fledged album in the next few months. The album will have ten of our own songs. ‘Kamikaze’ will the lead song with a video,” says Sharath.“We got a fabulous response this year and after this winning moment, many more shows are on the way,” says Akash Chacko.
