ROURKELA: To protest continuing failure of the Government Railway Police (GRP) at Bondamunda here to rein in criminal elements, the South Eastern Railway (SER) employees and local residents on Thursday blocked the Howrah-Mumbai rail route for two hours and held simultaneous agitations at two more locations.The protest came after a technician at the Diesel Loco Shed of SER, Madan Mohan Banerjee, succumbed at the Ispat General Hospital around 5 am. Bannerjee was assaulted by miscreants near the Railway Institute at Bondamunda on Wednesday evening when he tried to resist them from snatching a gold chain from his wife.As tension ran high, the SER employees constituted the Railway Staff Action Committee (RSAC) and resorted to agitations at the Bondamunda GRP station, SER’s area office and on the rail tracks. They demanded compensation of ` 10 lakh from the negligent GRP personnel on duty, removal of illegal liquor outlets and eateries from SER land and arrest of the miscreants. Former MLA Pravat Mohapatra, Rourkela municipal councillors Ramesh Bal and Subash Panda also joined them. Normalcy was restored after the Superintendent of Railway Police (SRP) KS Kanwar promised action to check unlawful activities and arrest the miscreants in a week.
