An out-of-control Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus on Thursday mowed down three motorcycles here, killing a 50-year-old man right in front of his daughter and injuring four others. The driver of the bus has been arrested.
Police said the accident was caused by the MTC bus plying on route 6A from Besant Nagar to the Thiruvotriyur Toll Gate.
At 11.15 am, the bus driven by Sundarapandian (46) at top speed crossed the centre-line on Santhome High Road near Karaneeswarar Temple Street junction.
Within a few seconds, the bus mowed down three motorcycles before it came to halt after hitting an electric pole on the right side pavement of the road.
Veeraragavan (26), who was riding a two-wheeler was the first person who was thrown off his vehicle.
Thulasi (50), who was riding parallel in another two-wheeler was mowed down and his head was caught in the left front wheel of the bus killing him instantaneously, while his daughter Priya (23), who was riding pillion, witnessed it besides sustaining injuries.
Ambrose (44) and his son Sathish (23), both on a two-wheeler, were was also hit by the bus before it came to a complete stop.
Adyar Traffic Investigation Inspector A J Ravikumaran and his team rushed to the spot on being informed about the incident.
They removed the body of Thulasi from the spot and sent it to the Government General Hospital.
Thulasi ‘s daughter Priya, who had broken down due to shock, and others who sustained injuries in the accident were also admitted to the Government General Hospital.
