NEDUMBASSERY: The Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) will host the regional centenary celebrations in connection with civil aviation of the country at the airport on June 18.Union Minister for Civil Aviation Vayalar Ravi will inaugurate the celebrations at the Main Conference Hall of the airport on Saturday. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will preside over the function. Minister of Excise, Ports and Airports K Babu will be the chief guest. Director-General of Civil Aviation, Secretary and Joint Secretary of Civil Aviation will also attend the function.  A seminar on subjects like growth opportunity for regional airports and airlines, revenue maximisation of airlines and customer satisfaction will be presented by the directors of Kozhikode, Kannur, Goa and Kochi airports, Air India Express, airlines representatives, tour operators, cargo freighters and ground-handling people. The seminar is scheduled to begin at 11.45 am. A cultural programme on traditional art forms of Kerala will be held to mark the culmination of the celebrations at 6.30 pm.Civil aviation in the country has an illustrious history of hundred years when the first airmail service took off from Allahabad to Naini with 6,500 letters on February 18, 1911.  J R D Tata, who founded the first commercial airline which later became Air India, would be remembered during the function. Tata was the first Chairman of Air India and continued to stay in the same post for 25 years since 1953.  The Ministry of Civil Aviation has designed a logo to be displayed on airport buildings, aircraft, publications and airlines.
