CHENNAI: A 35-year-old real estate businessman in the city has been arrested for brandishing a gun at two persons during a verbal altercation at MGR Nagar on Monday.The late night drama unfolded on Pillayar Koil Street in Nesapakkam, K K Nagar, just as shops in the area were beginning to down their shutters. A luxury car, zooming past the street, hit a motorbike parked in front of a photocopy shop. Shop owner Senthil Kumar and his customer Raghuraman, owner of the damaged two-wheeler, rushed out on hearing the noise. Soon, a verbal altercation ensued between the two men and the car driver, who allegedly brandished a pistol, threatened the duo with the weapon and then took off. The incident caused a buzz.Shaken, Senthil Kumar lodged a complaint at MGR Nagar police station on Tuesday, alleging that the car driver assaulted his customer and threatened him at “pistol point”, when questioned about the mishap and his unruly behaviour.A police team led by assistant commissioner (Ashok Nagar) P Raman and Inspector Kalaiselvan arrived at the spot and began questioning residents and shopkeepers, including Senthil Kumar, who could only identify the vehicle as bearing registration number ‘3’.Scrutinising the vehicular database, the police officials identified the rogue vehicle as a Volkswagon bearing the registration number TN 09 BR 3. Traced to a resident of Valasarvakkam, the car was intercepted at Ramapuram Arasamaram Junction at 1 pm on Tuesday, Investigating Officer Kalaiselvan told Express. The driver identified himself as Rajesh Raman (35), a realtor and resident of Om Sakthi Nagar. Grilled, Rajesh admitted to have assaulted Raghuraman and also produced the pistol with 20 rounds.“The pistol recovered from him (Rajesh) is .25 calibre and manufactured in Belgium,” the officer said. “Rajesh holds a valid licence for the gun.” The realtor further claimed that he had deposited the pistol in an armoury in view of the local body elections and got it back only on Monday. He was proceeding from his office on Bazullah Road to his house, when the incident took place.The realtor was arrested and booked under sections 294-B (utter obscene words), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 506-2 (criminal intimidation) read with Section 27 of the Arms Act. He would be produced before the Saidapet court for judicial remand, the police said.
