Mumbai: Anti-Terrorism Squad chief Rakesh Maria has been named Mumbai's new Police Commissioner. Maria's appoitnment comes a fortnight after Satyapal Singh resigned the top post and joined the BJP. Singh had submitted his resignation to the state home department on January 30.

Rakesh Maria along with Ahmed Javed and Vijay Kamble were the frontrunners for the post.

Maria, who belongs to the 1981 batch of the Indian Police Service had cracked the 2003 twin blasts of Gateway of India and Zaveri Bazar. He had also played a pivotal role in arresting most of the accused of 1993 serial blasts.

The decision came after the NCP had accused the Maharashtra government of delaying a decision on the matter. "It is very unfortunate that since one week there is no CP for Mumbai city. The proposal has been put up to the CM. Hopefully he will take a decision soon," NCP leader Nawab Malik had said.
