SAMBALPUR: With Maoists resurfacing and regrouping in the district, hemp cultivation funding Maoist activities has been established. Such has been the lure for hemp cultivation that farmers in Rairakhol sub-division have left paddy for the hemp. There have been instances of farmers using agriculture loans for cultivating hemp, while many are getting trapped by mafia and their land is being used for ‘ganja’ cultivation.Rairakhol sub-division has virtually turned into a haven for hemp cultivators and traders, with allegations that the mafias are being patronised and shielded by the Maoists for a cut. Under such circumstances the district administration has decided to clamp down on those indulging in hemp cultivation.In a fresh move to curb the ‘ganja’ cultivation, Sambalpur Collector Mrinalini Darswal launched a public relations campaign urging people and farmers to stay away from cultivation that harms human life.A special squad comprising forest, revenue, excise and police officials has been formed to move in villages and create awareness on the issue through public announcement systems asking people to maintain restrain or face the music for hemp cultivation.Till now campaigns have been organised in panchayat offices of Daincha, Similipal and Ghusramal. People and PRI members were sensitised on the issue.The gathering was also apprised of the NDPS Act and punishment under the law, which includes imprisonment up to 20 years, fine up to Rs 20 lakh besides death sentence. They were explained about the rule which would entail attachment and auction of their properties also, if convicted.
