KOCHI: Life in the city came to a standstill on Thursday as the cloudburst continued for the third day in a row. Road repair work was stopped, electric lines snapped, traffic blocked and roads flooded across the district.“All road works have been stalled owing to the heavy downpour. Even the repaired sections (where work was in progress) have been damaged,” said Soumini Jain, Works Standing Committee chairperson, Kochi Corporation."Severe flooding on roads has slowed down the traffic causing long traffic snarls across the city. Since people are unable to judge the depth of water-logged potholes, they are driving very cautiously,” said M M Stalin, CI Traffic (East).The KSEB reports stated that a number of electric lines had been snapped across Kochi, disrupting power supply for hours.“Fortunately, there were no electricity-related accidents in the district,” a KSEB official said. According to the Meteorological Department, 8 cm of rainfall was recorded on Wednesday alone and rainfall exceeding 7 cm was recorded till Friday morning. K Santhosh, Director, Meteorological Department, said the heavy downpour across the state for the past few days was caused by a low pressure belt in Orissa.Terming it as the ‘activation of the South-West monsoon’ he said the heavy rainfall would continue till Saturday.
