Recently, as many as 77 headmasters of schools were placed under suspension for their involvement in the irregularity. Addressing a press conference at the Secretariat after chairing a review meeting on the welfare measures being implemented for the safai karmacharis, KB Krishnamurthy, member of the Commission, lauded the State government for taking serious action to bring to book the errant involved. Since a large number of children of safai karmacharis too were getting this scholarship, the Commission asked officials to investigate whether the scholarship was distributed properly. Stating that the government had been trying to rehabilitate those engaged in manual scavenging, he said as per information, 36 persons died during last 10 years. While solatium was paid, many cases regarding the deaths were pending for a long time due to ‘weak prosecution’.
