BANGALORE: If you visit the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison by any chance, don’t be startled by the formalities followed by the prison staff. Reason- the prison is now shielded with a software called PRISMS (Prison Management Software) which has enabled the prison staff to keep a tab on each and every visitor. With this, this prison has become the second in the country, after Goa, to have such a software. With the introduction of this software, all visitors now have to register all their details with the prison authorities. Starting with the basic details like name, age and others, photograph, thumb impression, telephone numbers, address, their relation with the inmate, how many times they have visited the prison, how regularly they visit the prison and many such details will be registered permanently with this highly useful software.ADGP&IG for prisons, Kuchanna Srinivasan told TNIE that earlier visitors used to visit jail giving different names. “With this software, it will be impossible for anybody to give fake identity and meet inmates as their thumb impression will automatically retrieve all information about them if they have visited the jail earlier,” he explained.PRISMS has several modules like prisoners’ information, court information, prisoner’s property, cash, medical, parole and remission information. These modules include complete information of an inmate like registration number, nationality, age, height, thumb impression, marks of identity, employment, address and religion. It will also make it easy for the jail authorities to track an inmate’s parole details, his earnings or health condition. This will help in considering an inmate for remission as facts regarding his behaviour and discipline are also available. Goa Electronics Limited (GEL) has developed the software, which is customised to cater to all the requirements of the day-to-day affairs of a prison. The software has been installed recently and the facility will be extended to all the central prisons in the state. With this software in place, nobody could deny their visits to the prison. Last year, Health Minister Sriramulu visited the prison and allegedly met an inmate. Later, he had claimed that he had gone on an inspection of health conditions of the inmates. Another minister had also visited Bangalore Rural Special DC H Ramanjaneyappa, who was in the prison after being trapped by the Lokayukta police. The minister too had denied the visit later. Such denials could be a passe if the software is used effectively.
