Ponmudi kin held in red sand case

A relative of K Ponmudi was on Tuesday arrested in connection with the illegal red sand quarrying booked against the former minister and a few others.

Ponmudi’s relative Gopinath became the third person to have been arrested in the case. Of the five main accused, one has been arrested, police said, while adding that four others, including Ponmudi and his son Gowthama Sigamani, were absconding. They have been accused of mining red sand above the permissible limits from a quarry at Poothurai in Vanur block, thereby causing a huge loss to the State exchequer.

The complaint was filed by tashildar Kumarabalan, based on which, police book Ponmudi and four others under sections 353, 506(1), 406, 420, 379 and 120(B) of the IPC.

“Based on a complaint filed by the tashildar of Vanur block, we booked five persons including Ponmudi. One accused, Jayachandran, was arrested on September 23. Apart from this, we also arrested Kotha Kumar, Ponmudi’s friend, from Nannadu on Sept 28. Now, we have arrested Gopinath, the son-in-law of Ponmudi’s relative Sadhananthan. Gopinath is the son of Murthy, a resident of Muthaliyarpettai in Puducherry. We are on look-out for the four absconding persons. Special teams have being sent to various places.
