PUDUCHERRY: Celebrations for the New Year were muted in several Puducherry hotels as a result of the devastation caused by cyclone Thane.One couple staying in a four star hotel in S V Patel Salai told Express that they celebrated the New Year but without disturbing local people’s sentiment.However, people, including foreigners, gathered at the famous beach and celebrated. Police had to resort to mild cane charge after midnight on Saturday when the celebrations turned wild.A foreign couple recorded the damage in their cameras by traveling around the town on a rented bike.Special masses were held in churches and people flocked temples on Sunday morning to pray for peace and prosperity in the coming year. Most of the houses in the region had sported colourful “kolams’ as part of the customary welcome to the New Year.
