In response to the increasing waste management problems, police’s night squad is active in Thiruvananthapuram to find those who throw garbage. The night squad of the police is patrolling the city with the aim of making the city garbage-free. In this way, the team seized the vehicles used to illegally collect garbage and dump it in the canal. The municipality has set up a night squad to prevent illegal waste disposal in the city. There is a very positive response from the general public in sharing information about litterers. It is also a peculiarity that most of the officers of the night squad are women.
So far, a total of ten such cases have been registered in Thiruvananthapuram. One case each was registered in Fort, Poonthura, and Thampanoor police stations, five cases in Vanchiur station, and two cases in Cantonment station. With the issue of garbage in the Amaijhanchan canal recently making headlines, the Municipal Corporation has taken a strict stand to prevent the illegal dumping of garbage in Thiruvananthapuram.
Earlier, Minister MB Rajesh announced that strict action would be taken against those who illegally collect garbage and dump it in public places. He also said that a high-level meeting headed by the CM decided to nab such people.
“Establishments that generate large amounts of waste will be monitored separately. The measures will be taken by ensuring the cooperation of the police. In Thiruvananthapuram, special teams of the municipality and police will be patrolling, including at night. There will be no compromise in the cases of garbage problems and will not yield to any pressure,” the minister added.
He further said, “It has also been noticed that many institutions have installed pipes to discharge the waste into the water bodies, including the Amayizhanchan Canal. Similar action will be taken against them. In addition to this, nine people were arrested for dumping garbage in the Amayizhanchan Canal and a fine of Rs 45,090 was imposed on them. The municipality has also identified those who hand over waste to illegal agencies. Strong legal action will be taken against them.”
