Islamabad: Ghulam Mustafa Mughal, the Chief Justice of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir's High Court, was seriously injured when an unidentified man shot him in the northern city of Muzaffarabad, police said.
Mughal was taking a walk with his bodyguards near his home in Muzaffarabad, the capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), when the gunman fired at him, Deputy Superintendent of Police Yaseen Baig said.
The attacker managed to escape.
The judge, who was hit by a bullet in the stomach, was taken to a nearby military hospital where doctors performed surgery on him.
Officials said he was out of danger.
The motive behind the attack too could not be ascertained.
Police cordoned off the area and conducted a search but were unable to trace the attacker.
Police officials said the judge or his family had not received any threat.
PoK Supreme Court Chief Justice Muhammad Azam Khan ordered the local police chief to arrest the attacker within 24 hours.
He also ordered an inquiry into the incident.
President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack and directed authorities to submit a report on the incident.
