A petition was filed on Thursday with the Allahabad High Court bench in Lucknow on behalf of VHP's proposed Chaurasi Kosi yatra seeking a direction to the Uttar Pradesh government to give its permission for the same.
The petition, moved by one Pramod Pandey in the registry of HC, is likely to come up for hearing next Saturday. Vishwa Hindu Parishad has proposed the yatra by seers between August 25 to September 13 but the Akhilesh Yadav government in the state has refused permission for it to take place.
The petitioner has alleged that the government's decision in the matter was illegal and arbitrary and added that the ruling Samajwadi Party was politicising the issue with an eye on the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
Pandey has submitted that the seers and holy men had met SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh and told them that they would undertake the yatra peacefully, without creating any disturbances. UP Principal Secretary (Home), RM Srivastava, however, had earlier said that the permission for the yatra was refused as Supreme Court had ordered that status quo be maintained at the disputed site in Ayodhya.
"The yatra is being organised with the demand for the construction of the temple at the disputed site," Srivastava had said, quoting from a letter from VHP leader Ashok Singhal to the state government.
