Pilgrims Flock To Karnataka's Sirsi Taluk To Witness Lord Hanuman's Sacred Banyan Tree
Situated in Uttara Kannada district's Sirsi taluk, this tree has intrigued both devotees and scientists for generations.

A vast banyan tree located at Esale Cross in Karnataka stands out as a remarkable natural wonder, reminiscent of the sprawling forests of the Sahyadri mountains. After 1965, this tree took on a sacred significance when the idol of Lord Hanuman, known locally as Anjaneya Swamy, fully emerged within it. Situated in Uttara Kannada district’s Sirsi taluk, this tree has intrigued both devotees and scientists for generations. The bark of the tree has encircled itself astonishingly around the shape of Lord Hanuman and locals believe it is a case of divine intervention.

The appearance of divine forms in nature naturally evokes reverence, and this tree’s transformation into a sacred symbol has captivated many. Known as the Anjaneya Veeranjana, this manifestation of Lord Hanuman defeated Ahiravana and is adorned with various symbols of divinity. His protective stance, holding the vajra weapon and tulasi garland, symbolizes reassurance and divine grace. Furthermore, his chest bears the faces of Ganesha and the moon, adding to the mystique of the site. The slaying of Ahiravan by Lord Hanuman is also recited at the site.

Lord Hanuman slayed the demon ruler of the Netherlands after Lord Ram and Lakshman were abducted by him. To enter the netherworld, Hanuman had to extinguish five lamps simultaneously, as Ahiravana had a condition that he could only be killed if all five lamps were put out together. Hanuman took the form of Panchamukha Hanuman (Hanuman with five faces) and managed to extinguish all the lamps simultaneously, thereby killing Ahiravana and rescuing Lord Rama and Lakshmana.

This blessed location in Sirsi draws countless devotees seeking the blessings of Anjaneya, and the tree, known as the Hunaalu mara, is revered as his presence. Many pilgrims visit to offer prayers and homage. Accessible from Sirsi’s old bus stand, the divine abode is just half a kilometre away, or travellers can opt for local bus services on the Andagi route for convenient transit.
