BANGALORE: The Indian Institute of Cartoonists celebrated its 10th anniversary in Bangalore on Saturday and on the occasion, felicitated the winners of the Maya Kamath Memorial Award competition. The competition was organised by The Indian Institute of Cartoonists (IIC) of 2010 for cartoonists across the country.Vivek Thakkar, Mumbai, bagged the first prize followed by Syamal Das from Patna. Sathish Acharya bagged the third prize.Margaret Samte , a student of Delhi was selected as the best budding Cartoonist of the year 2010. A special Jury award was given to cartoonist Sajith Kumar from New Delhi, T F Hadimani from Kochi and Gajannan Ghonde for their excellence in cartooning.V G Narendra, Managing Trustee of IIC present at the event said, “We have great pleasure and feel privileged in celebrating the 10th anniversary of Indian Institute of Cartoonists and honouring the winners of Maya Kamath Memorial Award 2010. The winners were selected by a panel of eminent personalities based on the criteria of their ideas, craftsmanship and humour. Among the jury members were noted playwright, Girish Karnad, journalist, S G Vasudev, prominent artist and cartoonist Keshav and B G Gujjarappa. The tenth year of the cartoon gallery is a great achievement for all the cartoonists. It’s first of its kind in the cartoon arena in our country.” The contest was announced in January and was open to cartoonists from all over the country. Over 149 cartoonists participated in the competition, with 86 entries in the budding cartoonist category and political cartooning. The jury recommended giving special appreciation prizes too.S G Vasudev, inaugurating the ceremony expressed his appreciation and wished to all the awardees. He said, “It gives me immense pleasure to be in the gallery today.Indeed I have been honoured to witness the works of these young cartoonists. My association with cartoon started way back in the 1960s and it still stands strong. I have grown up watching works of R K Laxman, Abu Abraham, who are legends. I realise the same enthusiasm in these young cartoonists. I would definitely say cartoon is not a dying art. Narendra has been a great inspiration to all with his remarkable efforts. I give my heartfelt wishes to all the award winners.” M B Jayaram, GM Corporate communications, Karnataka Power Corporation Limited, who chaired the function said, “This is a beautiful moment for me, which will be cherished for a long time. I congratulate every winner and participant for their efforts.” Maya Kamath Memorial Award is sponsored by Amarnath Kamath, husband of late Maya Kamath, who was the only woman cartoonist of India. Presiding over the announcement of the results of the competition, Amarnath Kamath said, “It is the family’s desire to mark the efforts of Maya Kamath’s expertise in cartooning and to appreciate all the cartoonists of India as well as encourage budding cartoonists. I congratulate all the winners,” he added.
