New Delhi: Last year, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had given the UPA Government a modest six out of 10 for its performance during its first year in office.

But as he completes another year, political parties across the spectrum have expressed divergent views on the performance of his government.

“The manner in which corruption and price rise have been troubling the common man, if we look at the report card, this government has simply failed,” says Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

A similar view was echoed by the Samajwadi Party, which ironically happens to be a UPA ally.

“We are not going to give the government even one mark,” says Ramji Lal Suman, an SP leader.

However, the government on its part chose to remain jubilant. Perhaps the feeling that two years had passed by was a good comforting factor for the UPA regime despite the fact that for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, the going has been anything but smooth so far.

“I will give 100 per cent marks to him,” beamed Law Minister H R Bhardwaj. “It’s 10 on 10 by all standards.”

Now as Dr Singh gets ready to face the remaining part of his prime ministership, it is likely that many tough questions will continue to haunt him.

For one, the Left is not going to be left out? The men in red have already made it clear that they want the government to pull up its socks.

“Two years is not a small time. The government could have done many more things,” says Basudev Acharia of CPI-M.
