Parking curbs on Mission Street begin

Union Territory traffic police have started implementing the one-side vehicle parking arrangement on the Mission Street from Monday. Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Bhairon Singh Gurjar, said that the new arrangements were being enforced to decongest the town.

Gurjar added that as the next step, the new parking arrangements will be enforced on the Rangapillai Street shortly. The SSP claimed that barring slight opposition, the move to decongest the town was going on smoothly and the public and the tourists have welcomed it.

He sought the cooperation and suggestions from the traders, public and the NGOs and also asked them to suggest improvements.

The SSP said that the new arrangement would be made in other commercial streets also in the coming days. Led by the Superintendent of Police, N T Sivadasan, the traffic police personnel arranged the two-wheelers on the eastern side of the Mission Street. The violators’ vehicles were towed away.

When asked whether the same momentum in traffic control could be maintained as new vehicles were added in UT traffic every year, SP Sivadasan said that the police would try to ensure that the town was not choked due to the traffic movement.

According to statistics available, around 6.37 lakh new vehicles were registered in 2011 -2012, while the number was 5.71 lakh in 2010 -11. The number of new vehicles registered in 2009 - 2010, 2008 - 2009 and 2007 - 2008 were 5.12 lakh, 4.62 lakh and 4.15 lakh respectively.
