PARADIP: The crop damage due to the recent flood in the district has been estimated to be around Rs 17 crore, as per the preliminary survey conducted by the administration.District Agriculture Officer Nilamani Das said paddy crop over 8,420 hectares (ha) was completely damaged in the recent flood, while crop over another 4,000 hectares partially affected. He added though the preliminary survey has put the crop loss at Rs 17 crore, the figure might double after completion of the field survey. Apart from the crops, 53,000 people of 88 villages under seven blocks were affected by the flood. The Mahanadi and the Paika breached embankments at eight places in Tirtol and Kujang blocks. Both Kujang and Tirtol have been the worst hit. Sources in the emergency office said the loss of properties in the flood is estimated to be Rs 1.18 crore. The State Government has announced a compensation of Rs 35,000 for buildings which have been completely damaged, Rs 5,000 for partially damaged houses, Rs 10,000 for fully damaged huts and ` 2,500 for partially damaged ones. Deputy Collector (Emergency) Bibudha Mohanty said district administration had asked all revenue officials and tehsildars to assess the damage on a war-footing and provide compensation.
