CHENNAI: Two officials of the ONGC were rapped by the High Court for wantonly disobeying the court’s earlier order in the matter relating to absorbing of 46 employees as Marine Assistant Radio Operators (MARO).Closing a contempt application from M George Ravi Shekaran and 45 others, Justice Elipe Dharma Rao found R S Sharma, former CMD, and A K Balyan, presently Director (HR), ONGC, guilty of committing the offence of contempt of court Act. The judges, however, let them off with admonition.The judge directed Sudhir Vasudeva, present CMD of ONGC, to strictly implement the order dated August 2, 2006 by absorbing the petitioners as MARO, even by creating supernumerary posts in that cadre and grant them all consequential benefits within four weeks.Originally, on a batch of petitions, the judge directed the ONGC to absorb the petitioners as MAROs on the basis of the abolition of contract labour and as per the recommendations of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and the approval of the competent authority. Aggrieved, the ONGC preferred an appeal and it was dismissed. The apex court also dismissed the special leave petition from ONGC. Thereafter, the ONGC absorbed them only as supplementary helpers. Hence, the present contempt application.
