PALAKKAD: One person died of suspected Leptospirosis (rat fever) in the district on Thursday. Abdu, 32, the husband of Sainaba of Ananganadi near Ottapalam, died at the Medical College Hospital, Thrissur. He was undergoing treatment there after being referred from the Vaniamkulam hospital for suspected rat fever, said District Medical Officer K Venugopal. However, the number of rat fever cases has declined, he added.As part of awareness drive, ward committees have been constituted to conduct awareness programmes at the ward level. Squads have also been constituted with ASHA workers and other health workers to conduct house visits, and detect those suffering from fever. The DMO said that those having symptoms of rat fever were being given Doxycycline by the medical officers and those persons who were engaged in cleaning work were also being administered Doxycycline as a preventive measure. People have been advised to keep the house and surroundings clean, use vegetables and fruits after washing them thoroughly and not to use contaminated water for bathing or washing the face.
