NEYYATINKARA: The procedures for the Neyyatinkara bypoll were set in motion on Wednesday with the Election Commission issuing a formal notification for the bypoll. A contestant Padmarajan, who is seeking to set a record, filed his nomination papers before Assistant Returning Officer S Sanoob, who is the Perumkadavila block development officer. This was the only nomination filed on the first day.LDF candidate F Lawrence will file his papers on Thursday before the same officer, while UDF nominee R Selvaraj will file his papers on Friday at the Thiruvananthapuram Collectorate.BJP candidate O Rajagopal is yet to decide on the date of filing his papers.For Padmarajan,52, who is contesting as an independent candidate, this is the 131st nomination paper filed by him over the years to contest various elections in the country, from panchayat to the presidential elections. The filing of papers for the Piravom bypoll was his 129th while for Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka it was his 130th. Both papers were rejected as he was not a voter in the respective states. ‘’This nomination paper will also be dismissed as I am not a voter of this state. But I am filing the papers for the sake of setting a record,’’ he told Express. Padmarajan, a native of Mettoor, Salem, is hopeful of contesting the Pudukottai byelection in Tamil Nadu by filing his 132nd nomination there. He had won 6,273 votes at the Mettoor Assembly constituency in the 2011 Assembly elections, the highest number of votes secured by him till date.Padmarajan had made his debut in the 1989 Lok Sabha elections when he unsuccessfully contested from Dharmapuri segment. LAST DATEThe last date for filing nominations is May 16. Scrutiny will be conducted the next day and May 19 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations papers. The 1,58,897-strong electorate in Neyytinkara has 82,177 females and 76,720 males. The elections will be held on June 2.
