KENDRAPARA: The recent flood has cast a shadow on the Dussehra celebrations in Kendrapara. Around six lakh people of the district have been affected in the flood. This year, no pandal has come up in the district with people in many villages losing their crops and houses. This apart, many idol-makers have suffered huge losses with their unfinished idols being washed away by flood water, leaving behind just the bamboo frames.“I have lost 50 Durga idols apart from 300 terracotta items worth more than Rs 2 lakh. This is the first time we incurred heavy losses,” said Prashant Jena, a villager of Narasinghpur. The pomp and gaiety that mark Durga puja every year is clearly absent this time with people busy in reconstructing their damaged houses.“There is usually a festive fervour in our village during the puja, but now a spectre of uncertainty is haunting everyone,” said Sabyasachi Mallick of Dandisahi village. There is nothing left here except the damaged houses and sand-cast paddy fields, he added.
