NHRC notice to UP Police over beating, detention of rape victims
In Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor district, a 16-year-old rape victim was allegedly beaten up by a woman constable.

New Delhi: The NHRC said on Tuesday that it has sought reports from the Uttar Pradesh government over its role in the alleged beating and detention of two rape victims in the state. "Notices have been issued to the state chief secretary and DGP (director general of police) calling for reports in both the incidents," an official of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said.

In Uttar Pradesh's Bijnor district, a 16-year-old rape victim was allegedly beaten up by a woman constable at the behest of a sub-inspector when she and her parents went to lodge a complaint against two youths on April 12.

In the other incident in Bulandshahr district, a 10-year-old Dalit girl who said she was raped, was locked up in a police station for 20 hours when she went to lodge a complaint. "The NHRC has given four weeks' time to respond to the concerned authorities in the Bijnor case and two weeks in the Bulandshahr case," the official said.
