1. At 99% of population, Telangana tops list of non-vegetarian states

Telangana has the highest proportion of meat-eaters in India with almost 99% of its residents being non-vegetarians, a Registrar General of India survey of people aged 15 years and above has revealed. An almost equal percentage of men (98.8) and women (98.6) in the state are non-vegetarians, stated a report in The Times of India.

West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Kerala follow Telangana among the states with the highest non-vegetarian population. Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana top the list of states with the highest number of vegetarians.

2. 600 teachers detained during protest march to HRD ministry

According to a report in The Indian Express, as many as 600 college and university teachers were detained Friday during their march to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). Under the leadership of the Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA), the teachers have been protesting against a recent notification issued by the University Grants Commission, increasing their workload and allegedly threatening the employment of 5,000 ad-hoc teachers.

The protesters marched from Mandi House to Shastri Bhavan. DUTA president Nandita Narain said, “We are protesting the refusal of the MHRD to give a written assurance that the workload norms will remain unchanged…”

3. Love jihad is Arab nations’ conspiracy: Sadhvi Prachi

Days after courting controversy over her ‘Muslim-mukt Bharat’ statement, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Sadhvi Prachi Friday accused Arab nations of “hatching the conspiracy of love jihad” by doling out cash rewards to Muslim youths who marry Hindu girls.

She said Muslim youths riding “shining bikes” gather “outside girls colleges” and take up a Hindu name to woo girls from the community. “He will marry our girls. That is love jihad conspiracy of Arab nations which give Rs 7 lakh for marrying a Brahmin, Rs 5 lakh for a Vaish, Rs 3 lakh for a Thakur and Rs 2 lakh for a Shudra,” she claimed according to the Indian Express.

4. ‘Leave India’ notice to 10 Chinese nationals on Adani project

AT A time when China is leading a small group of nations blocking India’s entry into the select Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), the Union Home Ministry has asked Odisha to issue “leave India” notices to 10 Chinese nationals working on an expansion project of the Adani Group-controlled Dhamra Port Company Limited (DPCL) in Bhadrak, said a report in the Indian Express.

In a letter sent to the Odisha government last week, the foreigners division of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) ordered that the Chinese nationals working for a Thai company at the port over the last several months be asked to leave as the area is close to the missile-launch facility at APJ Abdul Kalam Island (previously known as Wheeler’s Island).

5. PM Modi, Amit Shah refuse to meet Eknath Khadse

The BJP central leadership has refused to meet former Maharashtra minister Eknath Khadse, who was asked to resign following allegations of corruption in a land deal. Both the PMO and BJP chief Amit Shah’s office turned down Khadse’s request for an appointment. Efforts to meet other BJP leaders proved futile as well.

Khadse left for Delhi Thursday and returned to Mumbai Friday.

A BJP functionary told the Indian Express, “There was no question of Modi giving an appointment to Khadse. He returned from a successful five-nation tour Friday. The PMO has to tackle more important issues as he was away for five days.” Shah, he said, has a busy schedule ahead.

6. Uttar Pradesh: Claim of Hindu families fleeing homes to be probed

The Shamli district administration Friday ordered a probe into allegations made by local BJP MP Hukum Singh that Hindu families were fleeing their homes over “threats and extortion by criminal elements belonging to a particular community”.

In a related development, the National Human Rights National Human Rights Commission, too, issued a notice to the Akhilesh Yadav government after it received complaints about families leaving their homes in Kairana due to the alleged fear of criminals. It sought government’s response in four weeks, reported the Indian Express.

7. Soon, no-selfie zones in Guj forests

Even as wildlife `lovers' flood the social media with happy selfies with Asiatic lions in Gujarat, the state forest department is not amused. Postmonsoon, boards declaring `no selfie' zones will be put up across 20,000 sq km outside protected sanctuaries which is home to 170-odd lions of the total 525 in Saurashtra, according to the Times of India.

“If you spot a lion or leopard, do not click a selfie,“ say the signage boards readied by the forest department.

Experts say getting up close and personal with the lion, which is a Schedule I animal, amounts to violation of the Wildlife Protection Act. “Taking a selfie or picture close the lion is not only fraught with danger but may also attract punitive action if caught,“ said chief conservator of forest, Jungadh (wildlife), A P Singh.

8. Kobad Ghandy cleared of UAPA charges, convicted of forgery

More than six years after he was picked up by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell on terror charges, a Delhi court Friday acquitted alleged Maoist ideologue Kobad Ghandy under stringent sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The court, however, convicted him of charges of criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery under IPC sections, reported The Indian Express.

9. Four caught with 700kg beef in car

Four Mewat residents were arrested on Thursday night for allegedly transporting around 700kg beef in a car to Delhi. Though they were first apprehended by the Faridabad police, two of them managed to flee in the car. The duo was later nabbed by the Gurgaon police on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway.

The Gurgaon police told the Times of India that activists of Gau Rakshak Dal had tipped them off that a huge consignment of beef was being transported to Delhi via the KMP Expressway. A police team along with activists apprehended their car. When the men tried to resist the arrest, a scuffle broke out among activists, cops and the duo.

10. No jeans for Haryana school teachers now

After introducing Gita in the school syllabus, the BJP government in Haryana has barred school teachers from wearing jeans. The government says the teachers should become “role models“ for the students and desist from wearing jeans in schools as it is considered improper attire, especially in the rural areas, said a report in The Times of Indi.

“Usually, it is noticed that the teachers of government primary and middle schools come to the schools wearing jeans. They are similarly clad when they visit the directorate for any work, which is not appropriate,“ mentioned an order issued on the behalf of director of state primary education RS Kharb on Thursday.
