KOCHI: The Centre for Public Policy Research has come up with a new study report for easing out the traffic congestion at Vyttila Junction. The report focuses on cutting down the area within the Traffic Island at the centre of the Junction to provide a direct access to the Mobility Hub for buses from the city.Under the plan, the traffic island situated at the centre of the Vyttila Junction has to be partially or fully removed. So too a part of the median on the state highway. By reducing the size of the island, more space will be available and the signal system can rearranged accordingly. This will also help the vehicles coming from the city to enter the Mobility Hub directly. At present, these vehicles enter the road through Thammanam Road taking a u-turn causing unnecessary traffic congestion, the report says.According to the present traffic regulation, a bus has to cross the Vyttila Junction more than once to enter the hub. The CPPR study suggests that by introducing a new traffic system the vehicles going to the hub from Tripunithura and Aroor can be directed to the Vyttila Hub by a single signal. For this separates lanes should be provided for vehicles coming from each of the routes. The Kannampuzha road must be widened to smoothen the entry and exit to the hub. By remodelling the junction the buses coming from the hub towards Aroor can take a left turn from Vyttila to the National Highway, the study says. This model will help in bringing down the traffic snarls in the junction with the existing resources and limited investment. Under the present system, 20-30 minutes are lost owing to repeated incursions to Vyttila Junction. These can be avoided, the report says.
