PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N Rangasamy and top police officials on Thursday visited the old jail premises, one of the prime localities in the town, following suggestions to convert the hitherto unused place into a two-wheeler parking lot to decongest some of the main streets in the town. The proposal was put forward by the Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) B Srikanth during a presentation on the steps to be taken to ease the traffic in the town. Chief minister Rangasamy spent 15 minutes surveying the area near the Grand Bazzar police station and also gave a patient hearing to the SSP Srikanth and Superintendent of Police (Traffic) N T Sivadsan, who explained the need for a parking space in the busy areas. The SSP informed the CM that if the jail premises could be used for two-wheeler parking it would create space on Nehru street, Kosakadai street and Grand Bazaar areas. Later talking to reporters, the CM said there were proposals for making multi-level parking spaces to be created in the old jail premises, which has an area of 3056 square feet.He said a decision on whether the area could be utilised for two-wheeler parking and whether a fee could be charged would be taken after deliberations.
