Ghaziabad: Though she is not a traffic police officer, but the way she manages the intersection at the Delhi-Ghaziabad border in Uttar Pradesh will put many officers to shame. For the last 5 years, 57-year-old Dorris Francis has been voluntarily channelising traffic flow during morning rush hour.

However, her decision behind her decided to don this avatar to act as a traffic volunteer is a tragic one. She lost her 17-year-old daughter after a speeding car crashed into her autorickshaw at the Delhi-Ghaziabad border. Since then, Dorris has been working as a traffic police officer at the spot every day from 7am-10am.

"My daughter died here. I have decided to manage traffic here so that no one else goes through what happened to me," Francis says.

The intersection on National highway 24 that Dorris manages is an accident prone area. Both policemen and commuters concede that without her, this intersection would be unmanageable during rush-hour.

"She is a huge help in managing traffic during the rush hour," says a traffic police constable.

Dorris, though, has to face a number of obstacles to carry out her initiative. While many do not cooperate, she is also battling chronic hypertension and has suffered from a liver ailment in the past. Her husband is severely diabetic and is mostly confined to home. But despite all the problems, Dorris says that she remains determined to serve the society.

"The death of my daughter still disturbs and pains me but I want that what happened with me should not happen with someone else too," she says.
