Lucknow: Ram Mohan Garg, Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Fisheries Development Corporation under Mayawati government till last year, was on Thursday arrested on rape charges but the BSP, mired in controversy over killing of an engineer allegedly by its MLA, quickly distanced itself from him.
Garg, who enjoyed the status of a state minister in Mayawati Government while he was the Corporation chairman, was arrested in Gomti Nagar area of Lucknow on Thursday evening following a woman's complaint that he had criminally assaulted her and made an obscene video of her five years ago.
Additional Director General (Law and Order) Brijlal told reporters here that a rape case was registered against Garg at Khair police station in Aligarh.
The victim had earlier lodged a complaint of rape against the former BSP leader and submitted CDs and phone call records as evidences, the ADG said.
Seeking to distance itself from the accused, the ruling BSP said Garg had resigned from the party last year and it had nothing to do with him as he was not even a primary member of the party.
Garg, meanwhile, alleged that he was falsely implicated in the case by the lady due to political conspiracy.
"All the charges against me are baseless...It's a political conspiracy against me," Garg told reporters at Gomti Nagar police station.
