Going beyond identifying the problems faced by various people in society, students like you are working towards finding solutions; for this I respect you, said president of Gandhiya Makkal Iyakkam, Tamilaruvi Manian, while addressing sociology students of MOP Vaishnav College at the inauguration of their Peoples Club.

“Going beyond identifying the problems faced by various people in society, students like you are working towards finding solutions; for this I respect you,” said president of Gandhiya Makkal Iyakkam, Tamilaruvi Manian, while addressing sociology students of MOP Vaishnav College at the inauguration of their People’s Club.

Speaking passionately on social consciousness and awareness, Manian said that role models in the form of actors were not apt for the kind of citizens we should be. “After the cyclone Thane last year, several thousand lives were lost. Those earning in crores contributed `10 lakh; school and college students from all over Tamil Nadu collected over `12 lakh for the same,” he said.

Manian also stressed the importance of one’s mother tongue, saying, “Out of the 6,000 languages in the world, one dies out every day. UNESCO reckons that Tamil has a 100 years left, and will most probably die out since Tamilians are among the few who are proud to say they don’t speak their own language. What they don’t realise is, when the language is dead, they lose their identity.”

The People’s Club of the Sociology Department also released a Development Resource Directory. Compiled by the students of the department, the directory will serve as a bridge between philanthropists and organisations that provide help to various sections of society.

The club aims to conduct several inter departmental and inter collegiate competitions over the course of the next few months.
