More than Rs 3.5 crore in scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes that disappeared from Dimapur have been recovered from Anato Zhimomi, the son-in-law of Neiphiu Rio, the sole Lok Sabha member from Nagaland.

Anato was detained for further investigation, sources said.

On Tuesday, the cash was flown to Nagaland in a chartered flight from Hisar in Haryana. The cash was seized by the CISF officials but it cash was handed it over to Anato after he produced an I-T exemption certificate.

Probe Agencies suspect that it may be a part of money laundering racket and an attempt to exploit tax exemptions for tribals in the northeast and non-existent security at smaller airports.

Anato's father Khekiho Zhimomi served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from the Naga People's Front party.

“It is too early to comment. We are investigating the matter," a senior police official said.
