BANGALORE: The first director of the Karnataka Institute for Law and Parliamentary Affairs (KILPAR) G Dakshinamoorthy on Friday warned future lawyers that the education and profession of law were endangered by the advent of market forces driven by the globalised economy.Speaking at the annual day celebrations of Visweswarapuram College of Law, Dakshinamoorthy said, “What is the state of law if a civil case concerning a property dispute is in the court for more than 15 years, while a corporate case does not last more than two years? It is a failure of the system.”Urging students to maintain values of the profession, he said that laws in the global world were being made by external forces of liberalisation, globalisation and marketisation. “Why is law beneficial to a section of people? Engineering and medical education are more popular as they tend to cater to market forces. One cannot do without values in law,” he said.Dakshinamoorthy highlighted the job opportunities that future lawyers have. “With the growth of LPO’s and corporate sectors, there is need for 60 per cent of legal professionals. For now, only 5 per cent of law graduates are hired,” he said.
