MALKANGIRI/JEYPORE: Hundreds of posters appeared at several places on the Govindpalli-Jeypore road seeking peoples’ support to fight against the anti-people policies of the government, notwithstanding the killing of policemen in the past. With the Martyrs’ Week beginning from July 28, the extremists also concentrated on recruitment with many posters calling upon the youths to join the outfit. Gearing up for the annual event, top leaders from Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar and West Bengal are camping in the jungles to participate in the memorial service of rebel leader Charu Mazumdar, founder of India’s Maoist movement, who died in police custody on July 28, 1972.What keeps the police on their toes during the week is the fact that this function provides the rebels with an opportunity to get closer to the people, whose support they need the most. Moving from village to village, the rebels are also reportedly persuading the tribal youths, sources said. While hundreds of permanent domes have already been constructed in Kangrukonda, Bhejangwada, Manyamkonda, Telrai, Kasukonda, Tigal, MV-79, Motu, Podia, Chitrakonda, Khairput, Govindpalli areas, temporary pylons are also reportedly being erected which would be unveiled on July 28.Keeping in view the law and order situation that might erupt during the celebrations, security has been scaled up in south Orissa. “We are prepared for any eventuality. Police have been put on high alert and anti-Maoist operations have been intensified,” said a senior police official of South Orissa. Red alert has been sounded in some sensitive areas.
