HYDERABAD: MP Maneka Gandhi and founder of Blue Cross Hyderabad Amala Akkineni on Thursday paid a visit to the Autonagar Dog Pound and reportedly expressed displeasure over the shabby treatment meted out to the captured canines. The animal rights activists urged the GHMC not to treat street dogs cruelly and advised that they be kept in proper environment and provided hygienic food. Maneka Gandhi and Amala also asked the GHMC to adopt Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while sterilising street dogs. The GHMC officials assured the duo that they were doing their best. Later, the MP, who inaugurated a painting exhibition at the Oxford Book Store, said people should turn vegetarians if animals are to be protected. “It is a huge step in conserving animals, since on an average, a person consumes a much greater proportion of meat for which animals are brutally killed,” she said. She also believes that people should fight at the local level to improve the condition of animals.“People should be more socially aware about animals and realise the importance of their preservation,” she opined in an interview with City Express. But without government involvement, things will not fall in place, she pointed out. Commenting on the threat of increasing human population on wildlife, she explained, “with ever-increasing human population there is always a rising demand for resources. So, forests are vanishing fast and animals are being thrown off their natural habitat. This is unsustainable.” Asked about the effectiveness of various online campaigns like “Save the tiger”, she felt, “clicks and SMS techniques will only work when they materialise in some form of action. People should work on it.If Anna Hazare can bring the government to its knees and fight for one cause, I am sure if people are willing, all issues can be dealt with.” The exhibition, where the works of 50 artists were showcased, was organised in association with the People for Animals (PFA)
