Thane: At least six people have died after a three-storey building collapsed near Dombivali in Thane district late on Tuesday night. According to government officials, 16 people have been rescued so far but three are still feared to be trapped under the debris.
National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams and fire brigades have been at the spot since Tuesday night for rescue operations but heavy rainfall is hampering the efforts.
The building which collapsed was declared dangerous a few days ago and an eviction notice had also been served. Despite that, the building was not evacuated.
At the time of collapse, 20 families were inside the building. Santosh Kadam of Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) said that some more occupants could be still trapped beneath the debris. The injured have been admitted to a local hospital in Dombivili, Visave added.
District Guardian Minister Ekanth Shinde, Kalyan MP Srikanth Shinde, Collector Ashwini Joshi and other top officials are monitoring the rescue and relief work.
